Sparkling Wine for my Real Friends

Louis Villard
May 1, 2015
California Spiltwine

The following three were my top picks of the night.  Lucas & Lewellen Blanc de Noirs was my favorite on the night. Nectarines, apricot and brioche. Perfectly balanced. – $30 (great price) Summerland Winery Brut using Sonoma fruit was very crisp, and tasted of granny smiths and lime. $30 While Brewer-Cliftons straight Chard, from their own 3D vineyard, has more mouthfeel and a bit heavier with nutty, yeasty flavors and baked peach. You could age this one for 10 years or so. $50

From the Ground Up

Harvest is over.  Even the Harvest Party is over.  It seems that everything we’ve done this year has been early.  That’s not a problem.  When we harvest early, we eliminate a lot of issues like rain or frost or a stretched out picking season.  Fast and furious was what took place. This vintage has the potential for greatness.

From the Ground Up
Harvest 2013 is over!  For the first time in 42 years, we had large crops back to back and outstanding weather that enabled us to pick our grapes at optimum levels of maturity.  2012 and 2013 will be superior vintage years.

From the Ground Up

We are still enjoying the remnants of winter and will finish pruning in ten or twelve days. That’s 450,000 reasons to be happy! With the lack of rain, we are starting to irrigate. A chance of rain is forecast for the next three days, which would be a great help.

From the Ground Up

Today has been an exciting day.  It’s the first day of harvest and we are picking ten tons each of Los Alamos Chardonnay and Los Alamos “Clone 777” Pinot Noir.  We are trying to duplicate what we did in 2008 when we made our multiple Gold Medal and Best of Class winning Brut Sparkling Wine.

Lucas & Lewellen Takes the Triple Crown with Brut

August 28, 2012

It can certainly be said that Champagne has a way of making people happy, or that happy people tend to drink Champagne.  Whichever comes first, we are happy that our Lucas & Lewellen Brut Sparkling Wine has earned three separate Gold Medal and Best of Class distinctions this year at the Central Coast Wine Competition, the Orange County Wine Competition, and the California State Fair Wine Competition. In addition to the Best of Class Gold, the Brut garnered a 94 point score.
