March, 2021

From the Ground Up

The most important task that we do in the vineyard is pruning. This morning I was driving my 2004 Ford F-150, “The Dustmobile”, through two rows of grapevines, admiring the pruning job. What we do in January and February determines what kind of grapes we get in September and October

From the Ground Up

The vines are not affected by what is going on in the world so we keep busy every day caring for them.

May, 2019

From the Ground Up

Spring is definitely upon us. Today is probably the warmest day of the year so far with temperatures in the upper 80’s. The vines are reaching for the sky thanks to the abundant rain and perfect growing weather.

July, 2018

From the Ground Up
Today we are experiencing the first truly hot day of the year. At Valley View, it peaked at 106°F for a few minutes To me, the vines are a little behind schedule although, with warmer weather, we might catch up. Right now, we are expecting harvest to be late August to the first of September.

March, 2017

From the Ground Up

September, 2015

From the Ground Up
Harvest is well underway and a couple of weeks earlier than ever before. Our yields in some varieties, like Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio, are unbelieveably low. Both bunch size and berry size are small. This situation is statewide, especially in the coastal regions. Everyone is questioning why.

July 2014

From the Ground Up

Our grapevines are on the fast track.  We’re about four weeks ahead of schedule so we’re starting shoot removal, hedging, leaf removal, and spraying for mildew control.  Irrigation is on our minds this year.  We will make it but we do have a water crisis and we really need rains this coming winter.  Supplies are low and wells are producing less.

September, 2012

From the Ground Up

Today has been an exciting day.  It’s the first day of harvest and we are picking ten tons each of Los Alamos Chardonnay and Los Alamos “Clone 777” Pinot Noir.  We are trying to duplicate what we did in 2008 when we made our multiple Gold Medal and Best of Class winning Brut Sparkling Wine.
