December, 2019

Amen to harvest. In mid-December, the cycle starts all over again with pruning of the vines which lasts until the middle of March. I have had a chance to observe and taste some of the new wines and it looks like 2019 will be an exceptional year. All the grapes were harvested at the peak of maturity. This is a big benefit for varieties like Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Sangiovese which can be hampered by weather or other forces. The maturity of this year’s Barbera was the best I have ever seen. This year’s grape crop was slightly above average in yield and the larger-than-average canopy caused by last year’s rains contributed to the vine maturity and could result in making some very interesting wines. Our winery is filled to capacity. Megan and her crew will need to work their magic!
2016 Sparkling Rosato: This is the one for the Christmas toast. This is the first time that we have used Pinot Grigio to make Sparkling Wine, and we think it is a practice that should be continued. Exciting both in taste and looks, this one was made for fun. Brut in style but floral with a touch of Malvasia Bianca and a little pink color and soft tannins from the Dolcetto - this Sparkling can be enjoyed before and with food.
2016 Freisa Rosso Dolce: When you learn that there is a red wine in Italy that is made sweet and has been recognized around the world, and you discover that you are growing that very same grape, you have to give it a try. Friesa, of which very few acres are grown in the U.S. makes a big, rich, and delious wine with huge tannins that balance some of its sweetness. Try serving this wine with game meats, duck, or roast lamb, strong cheeses, and nutty desserts like pecan pie. You will be surprised.
2016 Riserva: This is our super Super-Tuscan that earned 90 points and Best of the Year in this month’s edition of Wine Enthusiast, a blend of our Valley View Cabernet with the Brunello clone Sangiovese from the Los Alamos Vineyard. This is the best of Toccata and is deserving of some aging to take it to another level, but it is outstanding now and is my show-off wine. You can show it off at your holiday table with prime rib, roast pork, and rack of lamb - a wine for special occasions.
It is Christmas, the time for giving. The best of all gifts is friendship. We wish you all of God’s blessings throughout this season of joy. May your New Year be filled with hope, health, and a smile for all.
